Digital Media, all Hype or an important area for operators to focus on?

At Strand Consult our main focus is on the mobile operators and their shareholders – these are our customers. We are not a “digital pusher” and have no interest in selling Facebook related services. Our sole goal is to sell knowledge that can help reduce mobile operators’ costs and increase their earnings.

With the business world becoming increasingly digital, we have increased our investigation in digital strategy.

Most operators use Facebook to be able to have a two-way communication with their customers, as an extended arm to their customer service, as a media channel and to market and sell various products. Because Facebook is becoming so integrated in many mobile operators’ business, a very important question arises; How will Facebook influence the mobile industry strategically, operationally and financially?

Strand Consult identified 10 Bad and Ugly threats and trends which mobile operators need to take into consideration about Facebook.

Strand Consult has just published the results of its global investigation of mobile operators worldwide and their use of Facebook.  Our analysis shows that many mobile operators experience challenges with Facebook. Strand Consult identifies 5 Good aspects of Facebook for mobile operators

Strand Consult has just published the results of its global investigation of mobile operators worldwide and their use of Facebook. While our analysis pointed out more negatives than positives for operators, we found 5 ways which operators can benefit from Facebook. Mobile operators want a big win from Facebook, such as the creation of a new sales channel or the ability to turn advertising into earned media. The reality of the benefits are more modest. We caution operators about the risks of Facebook, but we don’t tell them to avoid the platform.

Here are the 5 good things about Facebook for operators: Research Note

Can Facebook Make Money In India?

Facebook is not the first company that would like to tap the growing Indian market, but it has made a strategic error to think that it can copy-paste its business model from the West.

Besides the shortcomings of Facebook’s business model is the fact that Facebook’s underlying psychology to tap in a person’s need to show off and be recognized by others is less important in a country whose people derive their sense of purpose and belonging from less commercial pursuits.  In India, being part of a family and a human community means more than being a node in a software network. This is not to say that India has no consumerism or that its middle class has no aspirations.  Research Note

Senior leaders in mobile operators don’t know much about the digital world

We don’t blame them.  They came of age in age in the early 1980s before email, the pc, and mobile phones.  The average age of a CEO in industry is 50. The Chairman is ten years older.
Naturally they know the classic telecommunication business, fixed line… And certainly they know the balance sheet.

But we live in a world of disruptive technology, much of it is undermining the classic business case for the telecommunications industry.  Executives of mobile operators have to know many things, and they have many challenges, but keeping up with digital trends is also a challenge.
